Simple Ways to Boost Employee Morale

Employee morale refers to job satisfaction or a feeling of well-being in the office.  However, strong morale means more than just happy employees.  Research has shown a clear link between employee morale and better job performance.  In addition, employees who are happy in their jobs are less likely to leave them.  This means that it is worthwhile for companies to invest in ways to boost employee morale because it will benefit their bottom line.  The good news is that there are plenty of ways to boost morale without raising salaries. Here are a few simple and effective ways to boost morale in the workplace.

Public Recognition

A pat on the back goes a long way, especially when it’s public.  Not only does public recognition let a single employee know that they are doing well, but it creates positive peer pressure to boost other people’s motivation to succeed as well.  Managers should call out their star performers at staff meetings to show them that they appreciate their hard work.  Employees who feel appreciated are much happier in their jobs.

Create an Incentive Program

Quality performance deserves to be rewarded and incentives are a great way to reward employees. Money alone isn’t the only thing that inspires employees. When it comes to creating a valid employee incentive program, there area number of options that don’t cost a lot of money.  For example, one way to motivate employees to work harder is to offer extra days off as a reward.  Another way is to reward employees with things like gift cards, company swag, or unexpected treats.  It is a simple gesture but it makes employees feel appreciated.

Encourage Continued Learning

This generation of employees wants more than just a paycheck.  They want opportunities to further their career through continued learning courses.  Providing employees with opportunities for continued learning and professional development is one of the best ways to engage with them.  It is also one of the best ways to improve motivation and morale.

Engage in Team-Building Activities

While this isn’t a new strategy, it is still one that every organization should consider.  Team-building can be anything from a day out of the office to a monthly hour-long lunch and learn.  Not only does it give employees a break from the monotony of their day, but it encourages coworkers to interact with one another in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Encourage Employees to Give Back

Another great way to boost morale is to give employees the opportunity to spend a day or two volunteering for an organization of their choice.  Not only is this doing good for the community, but employees will appreciate your support for their cause.  It is a simple gesture that will mean a lot to employees and leave their hearts feeling full.

Dress Down Days

Casual or dress-down days are a great way to reward employees for hard work and boost morale in the office.  This is a simple morale booster that doesn’t require an investment from the company and it fosters a sense of appreciation among employees.  In addition, physical comfort can translate into greater productivity so it’s a win-win for everyone.

Have a Little Fun At the end of the day, anyone will appreciate a little bit of fun in the office. Managers might implement a “theme” day where employees can dress up and there are rewards for best costume. Managers could also incite a little friendly competition among team members.  It is fun and exciting for employees but can also increase productivity for the company.  Employees could also get treated to a breakfast bar or dessert bar as a reward or just a special way to say thanks.  Each of these are simple ideas but can go a long way in boosting employee morale
